Self-harm is when someone hurts themselves on purpose. This could be in the form of cutting, burning, developing an eating disorder, taking too many tablets, etc.

Self-harm can be dangerous and is a sign that everything isn’t right. If you have self-harmed, or are thinking about it, you need to get help as soon as possible.

Young people self-harm to help them cope with difficult feelings that build up inside, like stress, anger or depression, or as a way to deal with their problems. 

If self-harm results in a life-threatening injury, go to your nearest Accident and Emergency or phone 999 for an ambulance.

Talk to someone you know and trust.

Talking to someone you trust is often the best way to get help.  This could be a friend, parent, family member, teacher, or anyone else you feel close to.

Get professional support

You can get professional self-harm support through The Wish Centre in Merton.  This service offers one-to-one counselling and peer-support groups.  You can refer yourself, or get a parent, teacher or health professional to refer you.

Alternatively, speak to your GP or someone at school about making a referral to Merton's Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
