Support for young refugees
The Red Cross works with young asylum seekers and refugees between 15 and 25 years of age, including unaccompanied young people and those separated from their families. This work in London includes specialised casework (by appointment only) plus group learning meetings once a week
We support them through the asylum process, while they settle in the UK and as they transition to adulthood. We also refer and signpost to other agencies and services, as appropriate. We meet the children and young people one-to-one and:
- Let them know what help is available and how to get it
- Help them understand their situation and know what their options are within it
- Accompany over 18s to appointments for health, education, employment, social care and legal assistance
- Develop their knowledge, confidence and skills.
We also work with some children and young people in groups, where we encourage them to:
- Meet new people and form friendships
- Nurture their talents and interests
- Take part in a mix of fun leisure activities and learning opportunities, such as improving English and I.T skills
- Adjust to life in a new country so they learn to live independently
- Help them learn about their rights and entitlements in UK and assist them to access these
