Virtual School for Looked After Children and Care Leavers

Care Leavers Local Offer Flag

The Virtual School works to support the education of Looked After Children and Care Leavers and to support their carers. It takes the organisational structure of a school, but the school does not exist in real terms, or as a building: children remain at the school at which they are are enrolled. We offer practical support to children, young people and their carers on day-to-day issues such as support with reading, homework and contacting school. We can offer individual tuition to help all young people to achieve their potential. Also we are there to support at specific times such as the transfer to secondary, moving schools, exclusions and gaining appropriate support for special educational needs.

When young people are leaving care, we work with schools, colleges and other education and training providers to help them make good progress and achieve qualifications at post 16. We work with colleagues to make sure the right support for special educational needs is identified and put in place.  We can provide individual tuition to help young people succeed.  We give individual advice and guidance for college and university applications as well as career planning.  We have an EET officer who works with key stage 4 and post 16 young people; she helps them to develop their skills so they are ready to go into work or education.
