Designated Medical Officer (DMO) for SEND
There is a Designated Doctor (DMO) for Special Educational Needs and Disability (SENDS) for Merton from the Paediatric team, at the St Helier Hospital, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust. The DMO is also supported by a Specialist Nurse (SN) for SENDS.
The DMO is the NHS point of contact for local partner professionals providing services for children with SEN and disabilities.
What does Merton’s DMO do?
In Merton, the DMO monitors and supervises medical advice to the Local Authority in relation to the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
The DMO provides the point of contact for local authorities, schools, CCGs, and health colleagues seeking health advice on children and young people who may have SEND.
The Paediatric team provider support for children and young people with complex medical conditions via their clinical assessment and liaison with education on the their potential need for SEN and in direct service to special schools.
The DMO liaises with other children’s health service providers including paediatricians, specialist nurses, therapists, child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) and palliative care services to enable implementation of statutory requirements for SEND.
The DMO ensures that there is understanding across health professionals of their roles and responsibilities under the children’s and families act (2014) and SEND code of practice. This involves liaising with other health professionals and delivering training.
The DMO sits on relevant health and interagency committees.
