Polka Theatre (and Theatre Workshops)
Polka is one of the few theatres in the UK dedicated exclusively to children. Based in Wimbledon since 1979, Polka creates theatre for children from 0 – 12 years, with their families. Polka has developed its reputation for producing exciting, original work for the very young, and has established itself as a centre for innovation in Early Years work. There are productions suitable for babies to enjoy the pleasure of stories, told in a multi sensory format, in a space dedicated to very young audiences, the Adventure Theatre. Polka offers a varied and inclusive participation programme for children from 6 months – 12 years.
For children and young people with SEND, the Polka Theatre offers free entry for carers and concessions on some shows. See the web link below for more information.

- Description
One show for each Polka production is scheduled to be a Relaxed Performance. These are specifically aimed to appeal to families with children who are on the autistic spectrum or have sensory sensitivities. To prepare you for your visit to Polka we have put together a Relaxed Pack, which includes a visual synopsis of the story, to help children understand the story they will see at Polka and prepare for the visit. On arrival you will be greeted by our friendly Front of House team, who will support you on your visit.
The show is adapted slightly by having fewer people watching the show and you can also choose which seat you sit in. The sound levels are lower and throughout the performance: the auditorium main lights are dimmed to reduce the contrast between the bright stage lights and the dark auditorium. There is also a designated ‘chill out area’ outside the auditorium that can be used at any time throughout the show.
Polka has a lift to take you to the Main Theatre on the first floor. Polka’s Adventure Theatre (where most Early Years productions take place) is on the ground floor.
For each Polka production, audio described, BSL interpreted and captioned performances are scheduled. Please advise Polka if you are booking for these performances to ensure you are seated in the best location. If you are booking for an audio described performance we will send you pre show notes (as audio) before the performance date and book onto the Touch Tour, which takes place in the Theatre shortly before the performance begins.
Please contact Polka if there are any adaptations which would be useful for us to make when you visit. Polka will endeavour to ensure your visit is as accessible as possible.
