Karate Therapy (Wimbledon)

OT play logo

Karate Therapy uses martial arts as a method of delivering group occupational therapy. This approach makes a typical ‘after school activity’ assessable for all children age 3-18, inclusive of any special learning needs and or physical differences. OT Play strives to make therapy as affordable as possible and therefore delivers most sessions in a small group (from 4 to 12 children). As well as the therapeutic and health benefits of martial arts, OT Play provides a sense of belonging both for the students and the parents, being part of a club. Additional funding, up to 75% per session, is available for application, from our partner charity Blue Kite Foundation.

All students have an informal assessment, therapy goals set and evaluated at grading time, approximately once every 3 months. To be part of a group and learn new skills from dressing into a karate kit, following verbal instructions, remembering karate sequences and learning self-regulation strategies through martial arts such as meditation. The instructor is an occupational therapist with post-graduate training in sensory integration and a senior instructor with Makoto Kai Karate Do, based on Go Ju Ryu style.
