Share & Care Homeshare (for families with children with disabilities)
Share & Care Homeshare's new homeshare service provides affordable support to families who have children or young adults with physical disabilities or learning difficulties such as Autism, ADHD and Downs Syndrome. The service matches a Homesharer to live with the family and give practical support around the home, as well as befriending and chaperoning the child or young adult, giving other family members some respite.
Based on the idea of exchange, the Family offers a bedroom and the use of their home’s facilities to the Sharer (the person who lives with them) in return for around 15 hours a week of practical help and support, usually including cooking, light cleaning, laundry/ironing, shopping, gardening, miscellaneous other errands and babysitting. The Homeowner’s property becomes the Sharer’s home for the duration of the agreement. In return for this, the Sharer agrees to sleep in the house for at least five nights a week – although it is their home for all seven nights – and to offer the additional support at other times during the day or early evening.
Costing the family around £6 a day, as well as supporting the family, the scheme also helps the Homesharer who benefits from low cost accommodation in return for their support. The Homesharer offers practical support in the home and can also accompany the child or young adult to activities (for example as their friend/mentor/chaperone). They are not permitted to give any form of personal care. The homesharer usually works or studies during the week and gives the agreed support in their spare time, often during the evening and at weekends. As the homesharer lives-in, the family may also benefit from house or pet-sitting if they go away on holiday.
