Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS)

The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards are part of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA) which is designed to assess whether an individual is capable of making their own decisions.  The DOLS are for people who cannot make a decision about the way they are being treated or cared for in a hospital or care home and other people are therefore making decisions for them.

Booklets explaining these safeguards for friends, family members and unpaid carers plus an easy read version are available on the website.
