Description

Following an extensive consultation  the council has revised its Travel Assistance Policy. The new policy, including details of eligibility, can be downloaded using the link on this page along with the application forms for those seeking assistance.

Please note the deadline for applications for travel assistance to commence in September of each academic year will be 1 June. For any applications received after that date, the council cannot guarantee travel support will be available for the commencement of the new autumn term and so parents will need to make their own arrangements to take their child to school.

Travel assistance will be provided appropriately to the individual needs of the child and any assistance offered will be the most effective and efficient available, in terms of both sustainability and cost and may include the following.

  • A direct payment agreement allowing parent’s flexibility to provide travel assistance for their child.
  • A minibus
  • A taxi shared with other children
  • A taxi not shared with other children, where there is no viable alternative.

The new policy gives information for both under 16 and post 16 pupils on travel assistance, independent travel training offered by London Borough of Merton and other available support with travel related costs.

The criteria for eligibility for travel assistance can be found within the policy – this includes consideration of where a child or young person lives and where they attend / their nearest suitable school / further education establishment. Please note the majority of children with Education, Health and Care Plans will not be eligible for supported transport.

Parental means do not play a part in decisions about eligibility and transport is provided free of charge.
