SEN Transport supports children and young people, who have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or Statement of SEN, to travel to and from school.
If your child is starting a new school or college placement in September 2021, you must make a new application for travel assistance. Applications for travel assistance for September 2021 must have been received by no later than 9 July 2021.
If your application was received after 9 July 2021, travel assistance assessment will be considered as soon as possible, however transport may not be available if granted until 20 September 2021 at the earliest and you will be required to make arrangements to transport your child to the school or college in the interim period.

Please note the deadline for applications for travel assistance to commence in September was 9 July 2021.
Travel assistance will be provided appropriately to the individual needs of the child and any assistance offered will be the most effective and efficient available, in terms of both sustainability and cost and may include the following.
- A direct payment agreement allowing parent’s flexibility to provide travel assistance for their child.
- A minibus
- A taxi shared with other children
- A taxi not shared with other children, where there is no viable alternative.
The policy for over 16 and post 16 Transport Policy Statement both give information on travel assistance and independent travel training offered by London Borough of Merton and available support with travel and other costs.
Not all children will be eligible for SEN Transport and criteria can be found within the appropriate policy.
Policies include consideration of where a child or young person lives and where they attend a qualifying school / further education establishment. Parental means do not play a part in decisions about eligibility and transport is provided free of charge.
Please note: eligibility for transport is not linked to the admissions criteria of a school. For example, some junior and secondary schools may give priority for a school place to children who are attending a feeder school but this does not confer an automatic right to free transport.
