New Wimbledon Theatre

Information about the provision for children with SEN and disabilities offered by New Wimbledon Theatre. The theatre hosts numerous touring productions of musicals, ballets, operas and plays, as well as an annual pantomime each Christmas.

Creative Learning at New Wimbledon Theatre also provides inclusive and accessible performing arts activities for young people such as workshops, youth theatre and summer schools plus bespoke outreach projects across Merton.

1. Aims of the service

New Wimbledon Theatre aims to enable everyone who needs support because of a disability or health condition to come to our theatre and have the best experience possible.

Creative Learning aims to deliver accessible performing arts activities for all young people with a number of outcomes including developing life skills, confidence and well being.

2. Location and delivery

Based at New Wimbledon Theatre plus some Creative Learning outreach projects delivered within schools and community organisations across Merton.

3. Who the service is for

Whilst our theatre is 100 years old, our aim is to make shows in our main house and studio accessible to all. Performances are open to everyone and not restricted to Merton residents

Our Creative Learning Department works throughout the year with Special Needs schools and outreach organisations, creating bespoke arts-based projects designed to tackle specific needs. Its mission is to work with young people aged 10-22 who live, work in or go to school in London Borough of Merton.

4. Accessibility

Access services available:

  • Main House Stalls only: street level access available via Russell Road.
  • Wheelchair accessible lift.
  • Wheelchair spaces with seat for companion.
  • Induction loop available at the Box Office.
  • Guide, hearing and other assistance dogs are welcome but please advise at time of booking if bringing one to the venue.
  • Wheelchair adapted toilet and Bar facilities in stalls.

We also provide access performances of productions throughout the year such as BSL interpreted and captioned performances.

5. Opening times and availability

The service is available all year round.  The box Office is open Mon – Sat 10am-8pm (6pm on non-performance days)

7. Measuring our performance

New Wimbledon Theatre is a commercial receiving house, staging performances to the general public.

New Wimbledon Theatre Creative Learning sets SMART outcomes and outputs for all its projects and evaluates each project on the basis of these targets. We also operate the PCASSO quality assurance system. All our projects are developed in collaboration with schools and other community organisations who use their own assessment criteria to ensure individual progress and development.

8. Quality assurance

New Wimbledon Theatre as part of The Ambassador Group is regularly monitored and audited to ensure the quality of audience experience.

NWT Creative Learning uses the PCASSO quality assurance system.

10. Staffing

We do not employ staff members specifically to work with children and young people. New Wimbledon Theatre Creative Learning engages experienced freelance practitioners to work on specific projects.

Front of house staff are first aid trained and receive regular training related to working with customers with access needs.
