Detailed Local Offer

1. Aims of the service

That all children with brain injury and complex health needs have the opportunity to live the best life possible. Each child/young person has their own individualised programme of education, therapy and support to help them reach their potential. We work in partnership with families throughout a child’s time at The Children’s Trust, for example involving them in goal setting. For children and young people accessing our brain injury rehabilitation service, we help them regain and relearn lost skills, where possible, equipping them and their families with interventions and the confidence to return home.

2. Location and delivery

Our residential brain injury rehabilitation service; school for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties; and short breaks and holiday clubs are based in Tadworth, Surrey. Our Brain Injury Community Services help children and young people in their own communities, across the UK. We work in partnership with our colleagues in the local community.

3. Who the service is for

Our residential brain injury rehabilitation service caters for children aged 0-19 who have a brain injury through a variety of reasons, such as an accident or illness. The Children’s Trust School accepts learners aged 3 and upwards who have profound and multiple learning difficulties and complex health needs. Our transitional care for children who are technology-dependent caters for young people aged up to 19 who are medically stable and able to use our facilities as part of their pathway as they prepare to return home.

4. Accessibility

All our facilities are fully accessible. Staff ensure each child participates to the best of their ability in decision making, their individual timetable, and play and leisure activities. We use a range of communication aids to enable all children to participate even if they are non-verbal. Please feel free to contact us in advance to discuss your specific needs and we will work with you to resolve any access issues as far as possible.

5. Opening times and availability

We are open 24-7, all year round.

We work closely with families, referrers, funders, and all community professionals to ensure continuity of care, and where appropriate, smooth transition to follow-on placements and/or a return home. For children accessing our brain injury rehabilitation services and/or transitional care, we work closely with community teams and provide training for teachers, nursing teams and therapists. Our Brain Injury Community Services also provide training and support for schools to help children with brain injury remain in education.

6. How to start using the service

We have a dedicated placements and commissioning team who are happy to discuss (formally or informally) the referral process of each of our services, admissions criteria and the assessment process. Please contact them on 01737 365080 or email enquiries@thechildrenstrust.org.uk. Enquiries are accepted from parents and professionals.

7. Measuring our performance

Families are fully involved at their child's placement at The Children's Trust and are invited to attend regular meetings and their feedback is welcomed. The progress of children is documented and openly shared with parents and carers

8. Quality assurance

Each child has their own assessment and tailored programmes/timetables which cater for their individual needs. We are inspected by Ofsted and CQC as well as carrying out our own ongoing monitoring including feedback from staff, families and children where possible.

All staff and volunteers are required to complete and pass DBS prior to commencement of employment or placement. Our services are regulated by Ofsted and CQC, and we have robust safeguarding and whistleblowing procedures to ensure the safety of the children and young people we work with.

Safety is of paramount importance to us and ratios of staff to children are worked out in accordance with their needs. Our site is secure with all of our residential houses featuring keypad entry and all visitors must be supervised onsite. Whilst we encourage the children and young people to access play and leisure activities and the local community, this is fully-staffed and always with risk assessments having been carried out.

9. How we capture and use information to improve our service

Our specialist multidisciplinary team ensure that each child has their own individualised method of communication – whether signs and symbols or augmented or alternative communication aids such as eye gaze or iPads – best suited to them. This ensures they are involved in their programmes and can make choices and make their opinions/feelings known, even if they’re unable to speak verbally. Feedback is welcomed from parents and children alike and is used to continually improve our services

10. Staffing

We have our own onsite multidisciplinary team who work with the children and young people that access our services. Ratios are calculated based on the individual needs of the children.

11. Staff training

We have an unparalleled reputation in our field thanks to our commitment to meeting the diverse needs of these children and their families, coupled with our ability to deliver the best possible combination of nursing, therapy, medical care and education. Staff undertake continuing professional development both in-house and externally and are fully trained to meet the diverse needs of the children we work with. All staff undertake safeguarding training and first aid training is completed as required.

12. Staff qualifications (minimum)

All of our staff are required to have the skills and qualifications required for their role. For more specific information please contact our placements and commissioning team on 01737 365080 or email enquiries@thechildrenstrust.org.uk
